Jean-Paul Belmondo Is Cooler Than You

Monday, April 13th, 2009

I just watched Pierrot Le Fou again, and I’m pretty sure that at his peak, Jean-Paul Belmondo was the coolest guy in the world.

The opening scene of him reading French art theory in the bathtub of while smoking a cigarette makes me want to do all three. The fact that he follows this up by going to a party, leaving his wife there and coming home to go on a surreal, violent trip with the babysitter whom he mysteriously knows from a previous life only makes him that much cooler.

Alex Gopher is also French, and is probably paying homage to his countryman by making a track with the same name.

Alex Gopher - Belmondo

And Thievery Corporation? They’ve got that French-cool going for them as well - I’m sure it is the kind of thing that a Belmondo character could have listened to while reading about art theory in the bathtub or gun running in Algeria.

fett

Courtesy of Suckadelic comes this wonderful piece of religious iconography.

I used to love Star Wars, and Boba Fett in particular. In fact, my 11-year-old self even had a letter published in Star Wars Insider magazine letting the world know how cool Fett was. He had at all: cool helmet, jet-pack, wrist-gun, mystery. He might not have gotten a lot of chicks, but that thought didn’t really cross my mind back then.

In the face of today’s Master Chiefs, Dark Knights and assorted other Iron Men, he seems a bit outgunned and kinda lame. But back in the day, he was the MAN.

If you like Star Wars, be sure and hook it up with Band of The Lost Star Wars mixtape. You haven’t really gotten down with the Dark Side until you’ve heard Vader beatboxing through his respirator.

Ero Trash

One of the most hilarious blogs that I’ve been following lately is definitely Erotrash. I’m pretty sure it is entirely in Italian, but you don’t need to understand the language to know that all they do is post scans from vintage European science-fiction sex comics. Needless to say, it isn’t exactly safe for work.

The title of of the blog reminds me of one of my favorite Chicks On Speed songs, Eurotrash Girl. I also think that when I saw Chicks on Speed in Montreal about 6 or 7 years ago it was one of the first electronic music concerts that I’d ever been to. My friend Lachy and I were also some of the only guys there, so the whole thing seemed pretty awesome at the time.

The Erotrash blog also has an album of songs available for download entitled Music For Strange Situations. I’m guessing that the strange situations they are referring to are the ones that the girls in the comics they post frequently find themselves in. Maybe just looking at the blog is considered a strange situation. Either way, it must be the music you should listen to.

Fitte Prins

Sunday, March 29th, 2009

I’ve been looking for an excuse to post this shirt for a while, and IllStM gave me that excuse when he sent me an email with the “Do You Want To Splash Your Blog with Some Fresh Norvegian Blood?” as the subject and a couple of bangin’ tracks attached. “Fitte Prins” is the Norwegian phrase that translates roughly as Playboy - the kind of gadabout ladies man that we can all admire.

Since we’re talking about fitteprinsen here, it also felt appropriate to post this other track courtesy of The Hood Internet.

Ninjas Need Lovin’ Too

Tuesday, March 3rd, 2009

Two things that I definitely think are awesome are ninjas and hot blondes - and that’s why this picture of a hot blonde showing that ninja some love is so awesome.

This rework of the Robin S. house track “Show Me Love” is also pretty awesome. Its by the good half of NONEWYORK, a fella that goes by the name of Something Wrong. They’ve got also got an EP out on beat port

We’ve blogged NONEWYORK before here and here.

The actual plot of the 2004 Appleseed movie isn’t all that interesting, despite  frequent references to Greek mythology and a Utopian city half-populated by “bioroids.” In fact, I’d be hard pressed to even tell you what the movie was about after watching it in Japanese once, English once and reading the Wikipedia entry on it. Characters seem to know each other, but its never really explained. I’m also not really clear on the government of this futuristic city, ruled by a prime minister, a military dude, a bunch of old men hooked up to life support and an Artificial Intelligence.

What I do like about it is the animation, particularly during the fight scenes. One of my favorite moments is when the main character, the “legendary warrior” Deunan (the chick that looks like a 13 year old boy), and her now-cyborg ex-lover Briareos (the dude that looks like a cross between a Cylon and the rabbit from Donnie Darko) square off against three sexy robots that use whips as weapons. The scene peaks when Briareos punches one of them in half.

The soundtrack, mostly by Boom Boom Satellites and Tetsuya Takahashi is also pretty good. The opening credits scene, with the Basement Jaxx’s “Good Luck” is also sweet.

Kevin from Daze of Thunder hit me up with a couple of their tracks the other day, describing them as “dirty electro.” He must know my tastes, because one of them was also a remix of Wu-Tang’s C.R.E.A.M.

The two tracks make for great accompaniment to that image of Iron Man versus Dr. Doom that I snagged from the Marvel website.

Oh, and if you are into animated .gifs, the Daze of Thunder boys have a sweet one featuring lightning AND a wolf! Check it out here.

I totally should have posted this earlier, but a few weeks ago I was Break Thru Radio’s featured music blogger - they did an interview with me, and let me choose some tracks for their show.

Their site is a Flash nightmare, so you’ll have to dig into the archives to find my stuff, but it’s there in the Anatomy of a Blogger section for February 5th, 2009.

For your pleasure, one of those tracks reposted here:

Metal Gear Ninja

Metal Gear Solid cyborg ninja

The Metal Gear wiki has the full story, but basically the combination of  a cybernetic suit of armor and a High Frequency blade makes for one wicked ninja.

This week my friend also reminded me of the genius that is the GZA (aka the Genius). If RZA’s futuristic personality is some sort of crime-fighting pimp, then the GZA will definitely be reincarnated as a cyborg ninja in the future.
