The Man That Fun Never Forgot

Tuesday, June 9th, 2009

I saw Tiga the other day…then watched the interview he did for his new album. If you haven’t seen it, go to  Tiga’s website,  and watch it. With lines like “My lyrics basically reveal essentially how interesting how I am” and it gives you a whole new appreciation for the man as an entertainer. Seriously - just watch the interview and prepare to be hilariously blown away.  I also really appreciate it when he says “As a child I always believed and dreamed of a glorious, golden, mysterious future. And i feel like I’ve arrived. ”

Tiga - Mind Dimension (Disco Villains Remix)

Fever Ray - Triangle Walks (Tiga Remix)

There is more Disco Villains here on 199X or check out the their Myspace. There is also more Tiga (I love that guy) on 199X here and here.

And for you lazy ones that won’t go to his website to watch the interview video, here it is in two parts:

Creepy Chan

I’ve been obsessed with this picture of Allison Harvard (aka Creepy Chan) after I first read about her in a Wired.com blog post (just look at that blank look in her eyes). Once the darling of 4chan, she rose to fame by becoming the runner-up on my roommates favorite TV show: America’s Next Top Model. I don’t know if that’s a rags-to-riches story so much as a…you know what? I don’t know what kind of story it is. All I know is that she posted some pretty artsy pictures of herself on 4chan then got sort of normal, disappointing her original fan base.

Read more about Creepy Chan on Encyclopedia Dramatica, then check out these tracks below. They don’t really have anything to do with her, but I’ve been listening to them lately.

Thieves Like Us - Your Heart Feels

Veronica Maggio - Måndagsbarn (Le Prix Remix)

(Thanks to Discobelle for this one - they’re always dropping good Swedish stuff) (Apparentally Veronica is a big deal in Sweden)

Catch more Thieves Like Us on Myspace. I’m sure they’d love to have you as a friend.

Welcome To Planet Sexor

Tuesday, May 19th, 2009

Tiga is going to be playing Toronto’s CiRCA nightclub on June 5th, and I’m definitely going to go. Ever since I heard his first album, Sexor, I’ve loved all of the guy’s music.

Wait..that’s not totally true. Half of Sexor actually sucks, and feels a bit like filler. But the tracks on the album that are good are amazing. 3 Weeks, (Far From) Home and You Gonna Want me are definitely some of my favorite songs from any artist. The Ballad of Sexor is also a hilarious track, and it kinda makes me think Sexor was probably a Fitte Prins.

I haven’t heard much of his new album, Ciao!, but like everyone else I’m totally hooked on the first single, Shoes.

Tiga - Hot In Here

Tiga - Ballad of Sexor

Tiga - (Far From) Home (Speed of Sexor Reprise)

Tiga - Shoes (Spencer and Hill Remix)

Tiga - Shoes

There’s more Tiga on 199X here for you, and a bunch of Shoes remixes at Ilictronix.

Catch Tiga on iTunes, MySpace and Twitter. Oh, and he also reps Canada with a .ca website.

Jean-Paul Belmondo Is Cooler Than You

Monday, April 13th, 2009

I just watched Pierrot Le Fou again, and I’m pretty sure that at his peak, Jean-Paul Belmondo was the coolest guy in the world.

The opening scene of him reading French art theory in the bathtub of while smoking a cigarette makes me want to do all three. The fact that he follows this up by going to a party, leaving his wife there and coming home to go on a surreal, violent trip with the babysitter whom he mysteriously knows from a previous life only makes him that much cooler.

Alex Gopher is also French, and is probably paying homage to his countryman by making a track with the same name.

Alex Gopher - Belmondo

And Thievery Corporation? They’ve got that French-cool going for them as well - I’m sure it is the kind of thing that a Belmondo character could have listened to while reading about art theory in the bathtub or gun running in Algeria.

Thievery Corporation - Le Monde

I always figured that this shirt would be pretty neat, and as far as I can tell this exact design hasn’t been done before so I made it the other day. Oh, there have been similar ones but nothing with the combination of Romanji “I,” rising sun and Tokyo in kanji. I know it isn’t grammatically correct in any language, but I was going for style rather than accuracy here.

Britney Spears - Womanizer (Neo Tokyo Remix)

Pizzicato Five - Mon Amour Tokyo

Thanks to Color Overload for hooking up the t-shirt templates - I’m sure I’ll be using those in the future for more designs.

See more from Japan on 199x.

Disco Sirens

According to this, the sirens were “dangerous bird-woman…portrayed as seductresses in Greek mythology.”

They were known for their beautiful voices that would lure sailors to their death. Odysseus was one of the only ones to get away with hearing them, and he had to do so by having himself tied to the mast of a ship and plugging his crew’s ears with beeswax so that they couldn’t hear the sirens while they sailed by them.

Anyways, here’s a collection of modern-day sirens. Disco sirens, if you will. You’ll be tempted, but not to the extent that you’ll need to put beeswax in your ears.

Paris Hilton - Turn You On

Lady Gaga - Just Dance (Something Wrong Remix)

Katy Perry - Hot N Cold (Something Wrong Bassline Line Bitch Remix)

More Love For Little Boots

Thursday, January 15th, 2009

After reading an interview that Sirhan (Trash Menagerie) did with Little Boots I’m pretty sure that I have a crush on her, too.

6 Reasons why you should also crush on her:

1.) She says she likes her favorite clothing label (Felder Felder) because it is “very futuristic”

2.) The Beach Boys’ Pet Sounds is one of her favorite albums

3.) She took her name from the film/emperor Caligula (I’ve got a lot of respect for the Romans)

4.) She makes the Tenori-on sound amazing

5. )Little Boots - Love Kills

6. )Little Boots - Meddle (Baron Von Luxxury Technicolor Remix)

You know what is messed up? If her Myspace page is anything to go by, she’s really into horses. Emperor Caligula was also into horses, and went as far as trying to make his horse into a priest and a consul (rumor has it he also turned the palace into a brothel).

Anyways, Little Boots reminds me of Goldfrapp who, it appears, is also into horses.

Goldfrapp - Ride A White Horse

Bukavu Memories

Friday, January 2nd, 2009

I was going through photos that I’d been tagged in on Facebook the other day (you know, to de-tag any controversial ones) when I came across this classic one in the album of some guy named Scott Ramsay.

I don’t know who he is because I can’t access his profile, but I’m glad someone tagged me in this photo.

It is from a charity event called Bukavu that was raising money for some sort of African-related cause. The entire event was safari-themed. I was never clear on the exact details, but I knew that my $75 ticket entitled me to open-bar privileges and a swag bag.

It was a good night - Tzero and I drank Amarula until someone puked all over the inside of the bar. (It wasn’t me)

Anyways, check out this remix of a Rockland track by NONEWYORK (you can listen to the original over at The Docking Station)

Rockland - You Can’t Stop Californi Yee (NONEWYORK Remix)

They’ve got some other good tracks on their Myspace - give ‘em a listen.

The Manni Boys Celebrate Halloween

Tuesday, November 18th, 2008

Alright, so I know that All Hallow’s Eve was a few weeks ago but I’ve finally gotten around to sorting out my pictures from then.

First up is this picture of Claudio Manni and his brother Toni Pepperoni. They went as each other, and won first place in the costume contest at the party we went to. I’m pretty sure that I drank the two bottles of wine that were their prize but that’s okay. Claudio (on the right) was the only one of the two who put any effort into his costume.

As Tiga says:

“Times they tend to change
Brothers into friends
Times they get so strange
Friends like brothers”

Tiga - Brothers

(keep on listening, because after about the seven minute mark there is an entire other song. Back in the day, we used to call it a “secret song.” Now I just call it me being too lazy to remove it.)

Tiga is on MySpace here and you can buy his tracks on iTunes here.
