Glitter Boy

glitter_boy

I’ve been doing a bit of reading about the old RIFTS roleplaying game, and it sounds like Glitter Boy is pretty much the most bad-ass mech around. They’re made out of reflective armor so that beam-weapons can’t hurt them, and they carry around shoulder-mounted rail-guns. You wouldn’t want to mess with that.

Just as a bright, shiny mech like that would stand out on the post-apocalyptic battlefield, Kanye West stands out on the hip-hop war zone of the early 21st Century. I guess you could say he’s the Glitter Boy of rap.

Kanye West and Clipse - Kinda Like a Big Deal

Kanye West - Homecoming (DJ Kue Remix)

Kanye West - Diamonds (Ratatat Remix)

For other Kanye news, recent articles that talk about 50 Cent referring to Kanye as “try-sexual” are pretty hilarious. And speaking of Glitter Boys, it sounds like 50 spent over $60,000 on his teeth.

In Fett We Trust

fett

Courtesy of Suckadelic comes this wonderful piece of religious iconography.

I used to love Star Wars, and Boba Fett in particular. In fact, my 11-year-old self even had a letter published in Star Wars Insider magazine letting the world know how cool Fett was. He had at all: cool helmet, jet-pack, wrist-gun, mystery. He might not have gotten a lot of chicks, but that thought didn’t really cross my mind back then.

In the face of today’s Master Chiefs, Dark Knights and assorted other Iron Men, he seems a bit outgunned and kinda lame. But back in the day, he was the MAN.

If you like Star Wars, be sure and hook it up with Band of The Lost Star Wars mixtape. You haven’t really gotten down with the Dark Side until you’ve heard Vader beatboxing through his respirator.

Stockholm Steez

The Persian Prince and I have no idea who Lorentz and Sakarias are, but we both agree that this low-fi (bordering on acoustic) hip-hop track is dope as hell. We’re both pretty sure it is in Swedish since they refernce Stockholm, and the language is definitely rhyme-friendly.

Check out Discobelle for the video that we ripped the track from.

Fitte Prins

Sunday, March 29th, 2009

I’ve been looking for an excuse to post this shirt for a while, and IllStM gave me that excuse when he sent me an email with the “Do You Want To Splash Your Blog with Some Fresh Norvegian Blood?” as the subject and a couple of bangin’ tracks attached. “Fitte Prins” is the Norwegian phrase that translates roughly as Playboy - the kind of gadabout ladies man that we can all admire.

Since we’re talking about fitteprinsen here, it also felt appropriate to post this other track courtesy of The Hood Internet.

I’ve spent a few good weeks relaxing on the Valley Isle with my buddy Dave. Our time has been divided equally between surfing mild tropical waters and drinking cold, American beer.

Dave also hooked me up with Bullion’s mashup of J Dilla and the Beach Boys, entitled Pet Sounds: In The Key Of Dee and it is the perfect album to listen to while driving through the sugar cane fields on the way to another session in the water.

The Sonic Mine Field has a great write-up on the Bullion album, so go give it a read. In the meantime, you can listen to a couple of the tracks here.

Kevin from Daze of Thunder hit me up with a couple of their tracks the other day, describing them as “dirty electro.” He must know my tastes, because one of them was also a remix of Wu-Tang’s C.R.E.A.M.

The two tracks make for great accompaniment to that image of Iron Man versus Dr. Doom that I snagged from the Marvel website.

Wu-Tang - C.R.E.A.M. (Daze of Thunder Banger Remix)

Daze of Thunder - Ghost Hunter

Oh, and if you are into animated .gifs, the Daze of Thunder boys have a sweet one featuring lightning AND a wolf! Check it out here.

Metal Gear Ninja

Metal Gear Solid cyborg ninja

The Metal Gear wiki has the full story, but basically the combination of  a cybernetic suit of armor and a High Frequency blade makes for one wicked ninja.

This week my friend also reminded me of the genius that is the GZA (aka the Genius). If RZA’s futuristic personality is some sort of crime-fighting pimp, then the GZA will definitely be reincarnated as a cyborg ninja in the future.

Future Pimp/Protector

I’m not really clear if RZA’s alter-ego Bobby Digital is supposed to be some sort of futuristic ghetto protector or if he’s just a cyborg pimp. Either way, he’s pretty awesome. I mean, just look at the album cover: huge circuit-board gun, Mad Max shoulder pads, sniper honey, Kung-Fu, van driving out of explosion. It really has everything.

I also think it is pretty awesome that members of the Wu-Tang make numerous references to the fact that if their group was Voltron, RZA would be the head. Equally awesome is that in almost every single account of the rise of the Wu-Tang clan that you’ll read, there is mention that RZA asked the other members to give him full control of the group for the length of one “dynastic cycle,” after which time he’d relinquish control and basically hand them an empire.

RZA - My Lovin’ Is Digi (from Bobby Digital)

RZA - Love is Digi Part II (from Digi Snacks)

Wu-Tang Clan - Shame On A Nigga (includes a line about Voltron)

Fun fact: Apparentally the RZA wasn’t the first Bobby Digital in the music business.

Phrench Pharrell

Tuesday, February 10th, 2009

Longtime readers of this blog know that I think Pharrell is pretty awesome, and that I also like French hip-hop.

That’s why I was so stoked to see this video by Disiz - he reminds me a bit of Pharrell and raps en Francais.

The only downside of it is that sometimes he seems a little too pleased with himself.

DJ Vincz lee feat Disiz - Danse

The music on Disiz’s MySpace page is a little  more hardcore, but still worth a listen.

Dynamo Toronto

Saturday, January 31st, 2009

After reading about him on Tzero I haven’t really stopped listening to Scotty Dynamo. It really doesn’t get much better than white teenagers making club raps about partying and living the good life. Seriously.

Scotty Dynamo - Cars Glamour Fame Money

Scotty Dynamo - Make It Right (Remix)

I had trouble choosing what tracks to post because they’re all gold.

Find the kid on MySpace, Twitter, Flickr and buy his stuff on iTunes.

Do it now, so you can tell your friends you were listenin’ to Scotty Dynamo before he blew up.
